end of year 2006

grrr, my laptop is driving me crazy. this Dell 500m keeps on resetting. no warning, no messages, just click, powers down and shuts off! it is damn irritating and i got work to do!!! wrote a whole blog entry and since it wasnt saved as a draft it got lost. this happens way to often, and i might just die from stress of this darn machine!

i wanted to post some stats purely for my own reference and for future comparison. perhaps these are to quantify how busy the years been, but hardly start to describe the numerous interactions with friends, family and colleagues, nor can they describe the many events, places and experiences. hence, i jot down what i found:

Days out of SA: 184

Hours spent infront of a computer: countless and insanely large!
Hours spent on the internet: estimated at 99% of the above ;)

smsBug: over 110,000 registered users
Intdev staff: 8 heads

The rest is unexciting :P Waiting for Felix to lift me to the airport. I think I need a break, no computers or work for at least the remaining days of the year. Flying to Cape Town at 10:35 and really looking forward to it. Going to hang out with Candice, catch up with Brian and a few eveing braais in Pringle Bay overlooking False Bay at Gavins place ;)

voip rates

finally managed to call Mina today. was good chattin, hearing her voice again. not surprisingly though, I cant reach South Korea using our (only) telecomms provider, Telkom. It seems they dont route to that particular mobile number range and always signal a network failure. Strangely though neither can I call that destination from my mobile phone! Yet, Intdev uses Connection-Telecom as its VoIP peer, and the route works brilliantly. Yes, of course I made sure the number was right all three times! Interestingly this provider charges me less to call Mina 15,000km away than calling any other South African mobile phone. Further, their rates are even less than Verizon/MCI (rate card).

anyhow, ran into Nikki (from scuba diving) today...had some amazing stories to exchange about the months that have passed. time flew, and two hours later I think we still only touched the surface. lets see if things work out, possibly to meet in Thailand or Singapore Q1 next year. im always amazed at how she gets around, manages to see/experience soo many things on such a concervative budget. i guess its almost the essense of traveling, rather living day by day and seeking adventure over rich, lush, boring hotel rooms.

days pass

things back in SA have been ok. i think ive been experiencing something describable as a reverse culture shock. its not a true culture shock in that i am certainly aware of how SA works, how we get by and the general views on things. however, having returned and now now trying to settle back in is proving a challenge. six months go by, and dear friends as still dear. the confusion though lies in the way things work, why things are a certain way and why South Africans we accept its many problems: poverty, crime, corruption. while I strill truely want to support this country I think i might be running out of energy. maybe becoming complacement?

my apartment is now renovted yet still not reorganised. at least they put in a nice cherrywood kitchen, granite counter tops, new cupboards in the bedroom, my fathers sanitaryware in the bathroom...but it still needs some work.

perhaps its that i havnt made and/or taken the time to sort my stuff out yet. Intdev had a successful launch party! We had about 150 guests attend, local artists exhibit their paintings, Wonderboom and DJ Kenzhero. A thanks to all those involved, those who attended and those who support us =)

I got my first media mention through Bandile at IT Web. I hope to make this the first of many but have realised that it takes quite some effort to get something published. I should be able to put out some more write ups on SugarCRM and other Intdev related products. The full article is here: http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/software/2006/0611211402.asp?A=LIN&S=Open%20Source&O=FPIN

A few other thoughts, but not gonig to spend my Sunday afternoon writing them up. Crashed out at Charles' last night after too much drink at Tristans 26th birthday, and think ill finish some work now.

Pondering about Mina and what she is doing....
