31 de agosto miss earth singaporeWho would pass up an invite to miss earth singapore...swimsuite final. I mean, its just ... to quote FHM... a guy thing! Not that it really means much, part of the usual cattleparade around the cat walk yet none the less, hear their story about a better world and saving the planet... usual spiel. What did surprise me was two things... 1) Winnie who invited me was actually part of the pagent, dubbed my favourite number 11! and 2) the guy whom I bumped off our table Vivek turns out to be an options interest rate trader at Credit Suisse in Tokyo, and was there to support Winnie. He'd further been at Mimolette the night before, and so we quickly teamed together to cheer for her! go grrl! Of course the evening to follow was a night out, Noir and Attica... though I recall having previously vouched not to frequent that SPG club again...though it has seemingly improved in quality and calibre since my last visit a good 12 months ago. catchin up w frenzSure, back in fabulous Singapore. Just catching up w frenz, visitin a few regular and new places. Found Mimolette through Winnie, a stunning venue Ryan and I should have discovered while we were still living here. It is a fantastic hang out!
The weeks been busy, mostly reconnecting with old work colleagues from CIMB, Frasiers and Neave, CityIndex, and related. Below some pics from Balaclava and Mimolette.
25 de agosto another reason to love Singapore AirlinesOk, so apart from being a great airline already I've once again been impressed. The flight was certainly an upgrade already, large 12" screens, a super entertainlment system with slick interface, USB uplink to play videos or slide shows off external devices.
None the less, what put the cherry on top this time was the stuart, appearing out of the blue at 3am to note "Mr Neumann, I believe it is your birthday. Happy Birthday. Could I bring you your cake?" ... erm, oh ok .. "Yes, I guess" and he brings back this massive, and I mean surprisingly large tart for one. It took up half the width of my tray table!
Subsequent to landing in Changi, found out that it was Lily who had arranged this. Sweet girl. It was truely a fab surprise and quite a feel-good-experience all round!
Happy to be back home. bday in Moscow w new friendsThis year, celebrated my birthday in Moscow with some new friends. I must say that its was all about the company, and we certainly had a great group together. Considering its only been 8 weeks, the network of expats is great, real supportive and loads of fun. Thomas made dinner at his place, invited Chris, Frank and me over for pasta, and we started the evening with a casual chat on his 11th story balcony (of course summer permitting). Later we met up at Pub Molly Gwynn with lovely Natasha, her sister and cousin, Gilles, Steve and few others. Thomas, you make a great wing-man!! He held out with me to survive Hard Rock Cafe and the Real McCoy till the sun finally came up at 6:30am (again). Super times! 04 de agosto absa property market report Q2 2008for those of you who follow my interests, I found this detailed report (thanks to the Treoc newsletter) by Absa about the South African property market. We actually need much more of these to gain better insight into the trends but its a good start: http://www.absa.co.za/absacoza/generated/files/89b4051e1a84a110VgnVCM1000003511060aRCRD/HousingReview2008Q2.pdf?F_C_ID=03b8ac45985bc010VgnVCM1000003511060aRCRD
another thing, can someone explain why the Rand is trading at USD/ZAR 7.23900 and EUR/ZAR 11.2842 (today, 11:54 GMT+4) ... did I miss something? 03 de agosto again, Moscow winsIn 2008 again, Moscow takes the lead of most expensive city in the world (reported by Forbes). Similarly confirmed by Mecers published in the Korean Times, the list shows the top 10 cities; 6 of which I've visited this year and 8 since Jan 07. Unfortunately my lovely Singapore is now 13th. I'm not sure if one is better off living in these cities, the high costs much surely be a barrier to entry and remove all opportunity for arbitrage? Perhaps not, dependant on the information flow, maybe one just has to think out of the box?
Having spent just over a month here in Moscow, I'll vouch for the costs being real!! Obviously not on all levels as one can certainly lead a far more conservative lifestyle, but for those socialising and adventuring it can add up quickly. A moderate night out (including dinner) on average $250. You add in accomodation, transport, clothing and consumables plus plus plus and you're talking real money.
This week was good, got to meet Sasch and a few fellow Germans. Their not directly from ASW, but we now have reason to get together more often. Thursday night was a casual dinner followed by drinks that took us till 5am; Friday was dinner at Maison Cafe followed by Most and Simachev similarly ending at 5am; and yesterday another round of Sushi at the Swiss Hotel leading onto GQ Bar, then 1171 (as Soho bounced our group) and Most (again) till 6am. *yaawwn* The days have been fun with Sasha, Gilles, Misch, Natalia, Mark, Thomas, Julia and others. Lets keep the pace going!
Found this interesting Russian pianist Igor Krutoi. Obviously never heard from him before but enjoyed his compositions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWxk-Ld8LBs&feature=related |
